MEICON-BC Faculty Symposium
Canada's Contribution to Middle East and Islamic Studies
Friday, March 22, 8:00 am - 6:00 pm,
University Club
This symposium on Canada's contribution to Middle Eastern and Islamic studies aims to bring together faculty from a variety of disciplines who are engaged in research on any aspect of Islamic and Middle Eastern studies. In suggesting this theme, we are inviting colleagues to consider the work of scholars writing and teaching in Canada that has made a significant impact on disciplinary practice. Is there is something distinctively "Canadian" about these contributions, especially as to whether they promote "Canadian" values, such as peace building, peacekeeping, multiculturalism, and multilateralism? In raising these topics, we hope to provide an open environment to encourage interactive dialogue on cutting-edge research, to confront the challenges of mobilizing knowledge especially in public discourse on the Middle East and Islam, and to strengthen the network of scholars in Western Canada and beyond. We hope to arrange for publication of the symposium papers.
The symposium is preceded on the evening of March 21, 2013, by the UVic Centre for Studies in Religion and Society’s Distinguished Lecture in Islam, featuring Dr. Zayn Kassam from Pomona College and followed on March 23 by the 5th Annual MEICON-BC Student Conference.
